William Xavier “Billy” McElroy, 74, of Quincy, passed away on Wednesday, February 26, after a battle with lung cancer. A devoted father, he leaves behind his sons, Joseph Thomas McElroy and Edward A. McElroy of Scituate. He was the beloved son of the late Joseph and Elinor McElroy and a cherished brother to Margaret Keohan of Plymouth, Judy Svensen of Scituate, Patricia Buening of Marshfield, and the late Joseph T. McElroy II, Virginia Stone, and Maurice McElroy, all of Scituate. Billy is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins, whom he loved dearly. Born on September 27, 1950, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton, Billy was a lifelong resident of Scituate. He graduated from Scituate High School in 1968 and continued his studies at New Prep School in Cambridge. He began his career at Joseph T. McElroy and Sons in Scituate before spending many years in auto sales at Quirk Works in Quincy. Billy was a gifted conversationalist, known for his sharp wit and passion for sports, music, politics, and history. He will especially be remembered for his kindness, his big heart, and his ability to make everyone he met feel special. He will be deeply missed.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent St., Scituate, on Tuesday morning, March 11th, at 11:00 AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery, Scituate. In lieu of flowers, donations in Billy’s memory may be made to: The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, St. Mary of the Nativity, 1 Kent Street, Scituate, MA 02066. Arrangements are under the care of the Brown & Hickey Funeral Home, Belmont.
