It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard M. Mello on April 15, 2026, at the age of 85. Richard—Ritchie, Dick, Dad, and Papa, died peacefully and went to be with our Lord after fiercely battling a long and relentless illness. He faithfully prayed his Rosary and attended morning mass as well as afternoon Eucharistic Adoration. His devote faith carried him through his darkest hours; and he told his family that while he loved them dearly, he was ready to go.
Richard is predeceased by his parents, Nora and Manual Mello. He was the husband of Mary (Maureen) Mello, and the loving father of Christine Mello and Maureen Daly and her husband, Brian. He also leaves behind his cherished grandson, Michael Daly. Richard is also survived by his twin sister, Carole McGonigal; his brother, James Mello; his aunts, Teresa Pacheco and Laura Menezes; four nephews; and many grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins.
Richard was honored to serve with the Belmont Police Department as a patrolman and detective for 34 years. He took great pride and held heartfelt joy when he was able to help someone in need. He received numerous commendations recognizing his service of going above and beyond the call of duty. Following his retirement, he continued his service for several years with the Towns of Chelmsford and Tyngsboro. Throughout his career, he formed countless and deeply valued friendships and made a lasting impact on many lives.
A visitation will be held at the Brown & Hickey Funeral Home on Thursday, April 23 from 8:30 to 9:30 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Luke Church at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Interment will follow at Belmont Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
