Retired Belmont Assistant Police Chief Richard Lane of Winchester formerly of Belmont died at the age of 65 on Nov. 14 after a year-long battle with cancer. Beloved husband of Carol (Sorenti) Lane. Father of Brian Lane. Son of the late John and Marguerite Lane. Brother of Jack Lane and Barbara Lane. Uncle of Eric Lane and Sergei Rielly.
Lane was a widely-respected member of the Belmont Police Department for more than 35 years. He joined the department on Feb.10, 1977 and rose through the ranks.
In March 1997, he was promoted to lieutenant. On Aug. 8, 2004, he was named the department’s first ever Assistant Police Chief. He served as the Acting Police Chief from 2006 to 2007. Lane was also Belmont’s first Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program officer.
He resumed his role as assistant chief when retired Belmont Police Chief Richard McLaughlin was hired in 2007 and they worked together until Lane’s retirement on July 14, 2012.
A graveside service will be held at the Belmont Cemetery 121 Grove Street Belmont on Friday Nov. 20th at 12:30. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all guests are required to wear masks and practice social distancing. A private funeral mass will be held at St Joseph Church in Belmont.
