Norman Thomas McIver passed away peacefully on June 24, 2023 at age 87 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Norman’s enthusiasm for life was evident the moment you met him. He was born August 12, 1935 in Cambridge, Massachusetts to the late Edward J. and Mary (Dodd) McIver and graduated from Cambridge High and Latin in 1952. He met his wonderful wife, Arlene Dabrowski, also of Cambridge, and they were married for 62 happy years.
He graduated from Rutgers University. He was lucky enough to have found a career that he loved in banking and spent many years working for Bay Bank/Harvard Trust Company and then for Cambridge Trust Company, where he was a Senior Vice President. Even after retiring from full time duties, he remained as a consultant for the bank until he was almost 80.
Norman was active in his community, as a longtime member of the Lion’s Club of Belmont and the Arlington Elks, and participated on many boards and other organizations, including Cambridge Homes Senior Living, Sancta Maria Nursing Facility, CASPAR, the Central Square Business Association, the YMCA, American Red Cross and the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce.
He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves as a Staff Sergeant. He was always ready with a joke and a story, and he loved spending time with family and friends. Norman would spend time with family at his cottage in Manomet (Plymouth) in the summer and eventually became a snowbird, spending the winters in Del Ray Beach, Florida.
He was also a dedicated and lifelong Catholic and enjoyed going to church weekly. His effervescence was contagious and he was fond of hanging out with friends or family and having a beer or, one of his favorites, cookies.
He had four sons, Norman of Belmont, Richard (and wife Season) of Sandown, NH, Paul (and wife Carol) of Winchester, and Mark (and wife Sunni) of Belmont, 4 grandkids, Richard McIver, Kevin McIver, Arya Odunukwe-McIver and Alexis Petrin, as well as two great-grandchildren, Isabella and Kayla McIver. He will be deeply missed by his family and those who knew him.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend and may visit with family at the Brown & Hickey Funeral Home, 36 Trapelo Road, Belmont, MA 02478 from 4-7 pm on Thursday, June 29, 2023. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph Parish, 130 Common Street, Belmont, MA 02478 at 10 AM on Friday, June 30, 2023, followed by burial at Highland Meadow Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Norman’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association, 309 Waverly Oaks Road, Waltham, MA 02452 or at alz.org
