Dr. Nabil Ramez Fahmy, a distinguished anesthesiologist, revered educator, and beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2026, surrounded by his family and close friends. He was 86 years old.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Amira (Mikhail); his sons, John and Joseph; his beloved grandchildren, Julia and Matthew; and his sister, Nagoua Malek of Cleveland, Ohio. He was predeceased by two siblings, Nadia of Egypt and Nazem of Australia. He was also a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews.
A proud member of the Coptic Orthodox Christian community, Dr. Fahmy was born in Alexandria, Egypt and overcame early barriers through intellect, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Driven by a deep thirst for knowledge, he moved to the United Kingdom to pursue advanced medical training. There, he progressed from a community hospital appointment to a premier academic center, earning his primary fellowship and receiving the prestigious Nuffield Prize. This award is for anesthesia residents who achieve the highest distinction in the Primary Fellowship examination (FRCA) of the Royal College of Anesthetists.
He later came to the United States, where he began his career at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Over a long and distinguished career at MGH, he rose through the ranks to become Director of Clinical Orthopedic Anesthesia and served as a valued member of the Harvard Medical School faculty. He led the orthopedic anesthesia group for many years and contributed extensively to patient care, research, teaching, and professional publication. His research was featured frequently in many medical publications, most notably the New England Journal of Medicine.
Dr. Fahmy was honored to serve as a visiting professor internationally, lecturing and sharing his expertise across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Despite his global recognition, what he loved most was caring for patients. He found his greatest fulfillment at the bedside, practicing medicine with skill, compassion, and integrity. He trained and mentored countless residents, generously sharing his knowledge and shaping future generations of physicians.
Beyond his professional achievements, Nabil was an avid photographer and loved to travel (having visited over 50 countries). He was a passionate Boston Bruins and New England Patriots fan, in addition to working on the team’s medical staff. He was devoted to his family and deeply cherished his role as “Gido” to his grandchildren, Julia and Matthew.
A private funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. The family appreciates everyone’s prayers and sympathies, and plans to have a Celebration of Life in his memory at a future date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church in Natick, MA/St Abram Ministry or St. Mary’s Orthodox Church in Cambridge, MA.
