Mary Anne Mangone, 69, of Cambridge, passed away Saturday, July 1st, 2023. She passed peacefully with her family by her side after a 19-month battle with stomach cancer.
Born in Chelsea on March 2, 1954 to William and Gertrude Long, Mary Anne was the oldest of four. A caretaker from birth, Mary Anne was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, friend, and nurse who touched so many hearts in her lifetime.
Mary Anne was passionate about caring for others, and after attending Suffolk University, went on to attend Somerville School of Nursing in 1969. In her 48-year career as a nurse, she was adored by staff and patients alike due to her positivity, kindness, and unforgettable humor.
Mary Anne was happiest when she was with family, especially the love of her life, William, her husband of 43 years. She cherished making memories together along with their children and grandchildren. One of her most recent greatest joys was spending each morning with her newest granddaughter, Willa, born this past March.
Despite thirteen orthopedic surgeries in her lifetime, Mary Anne was never one to sit still. You could spot her bright smile lip-syncing at any classic rock concert, cheering on her grandchildren at basketball games, taking a water aerobics class, crossing state lines to visit family, going shopping for gifts for anyone but herself, or taking trips to the beach with loved ones. She also enjoyed traveling with her sisters, hosting holidays and dinners, and spoiling her three cats and granddog.
When facing her cancer diagnosis, Mary Anne chose to fight with bravery and grace so she could spend more time with and care for her loved ones. A self-proclaimed “mermaid at heart”, she wished to be remembered each time her loved ones visit the beach.
Mary Anne’s family and friends will forever cherish her unmatched selflessness, infectious optimism, and razor-sharp wit.
She is survived by her husband, William, of Cambridge, and her three children: Joe Mangone and his wife Lisa of Medford, Andrea Mangone and her wife Toshaun of Wilmington, and Audrey Mangone and her partner James Brown of Cambridge. She has six grandchildren: Joseph, Jack, Ella, Ciera, RJ, and Willa. She is the beloved sister of Margaret Calce of Rhode Island, Kathleen Long of Somerville, and James Thoele of New Hampshire. She is a dear sister-in-law, aunt, and a loving friend to countless others.
Mary Anne had a heart as deep and wide as the ocean she loved so dearly. She is loved, and will be missed, beyond words or measure.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the MSPCA or American Cancer Society.
Calling hours are from 2:00-5:00 PM on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at Brown & Hickey Funeral Home, 36 Trapelo Road, Belmont, with a Celebration of Life to follow. Burial will be private.
