Martha Jacovides, of Belmont, came to the end of her life on November 4th , 2023. She was 87 years old. The cause was congestive heart failure.
Mrs. Jacovides, born in Lowell, MA in 1936, graduated from Lowell High School, and from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she majored in journalism. She arrived in New York City in 1956 where she taught English at Wadleigh Junior High School in Harlem. There, she met Michael Jacovides, a history teacher. They married in 1961 and lived on Long Island, NY for 45 years, where they raised two daughters, Melina and Mary Beth. Martha found her way back to journalism in 1973 when she became editor of a local newspaper and later became founding editor of the Valley Stream Herald. She won several awards for her editorial writing. Michael and Martha also cared deeply for the environment and in 1973, were founding members of the Malverne Environmental Council. In 2006, she and Michael moved to Belmont, MA to be closer to their grandchildren. Winters were spent in Green Valley, AZ where Martha learned Spanish, perfected her ethnic cooking skills and created beautiful beaded jewelry. She had a strong intellectual curiosity about the world in general, was an avid reader of all genres, and could discuss topics from liberal arts, history, sciences and technology and politics. She loved birds, flowers, good food and good jokes. She made friends easily and enjoyed her connections at the Belmont Senior Center. She still kept in close touch with her college friends, Madeleine and Tibby, and her many friends on Long Island.
