Helen Lee Lawrence Pierce, widow of Allen Brush Pierce, passed away peacefully on July 25th from natural causes at age 95 and 5 months. Her love of people and natural curiosity for the world around her led to a rich life of many adventures. As a young woman, she lived and studied in Mexico and Chile. Later, she joined the State Department and served for several years in Argentina after the War. Upon returning home to New York City, Lee taught English and Creative Dramatics before marrying in 1962 and becoming a resident of Cambridge, MA, where she has lived ever since. After her husband’s death in 1968, Lee devoted herself to raising her two young children, and to her creative writing. As a published poet, playwright, international doll collector, storyteller, lecturer and author of several books and memoirs, Lee inspired and encouraged people everywhere she went. She is survived by her loving sons W. Shelby Pierce IV of Cambridge, MA and Allen L. Pierce of Jaffrey, NH. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Tuesday, August 2 at 10:30 AM at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Harvard Square, Cambridge. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Lee’s name to EVKids: evkids.org/give
