Kevin M. Mahony of Belmont, MA passed away in the arms of his loving family on July 22, 2024. Kevin was born in Flushing Hospital, Flushing, New York to John Mahony and Mildred Stubing, and was the youngest of three boys. Kevin attended Holy Cross High School, a Catholic, all-boys school in Flushing, New York, and then went on to Georgetown University. Kevin was accepted to Stanford University’s School of Business, but the Vietnam War changed his course. He deferred and attended Naval Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Newport, Rhode Island. Kevin was so proud to have served his country, and his love for and awe of the ocean continued throughout his life. Navigation was always one of his talents. He graduated as a Distinguished Naval Graduate in 1969 and then became the Naval Communications Officer on the USS John R. Pierce (DD-753), a Sumner Class destroyer that is now retired. During that time, he received the William S. Stuhr Award and was honored as a Naval Outstanding Junior Officer. From there, he went on to the Pentagon and served under the illustrious Rear Admiral Samuel Lee Gravely, Jr., the Navy’s First African American Commander. Kevin received an early honorable discharge as a Lieutenant in the summer of 1972 to attend Harvard Business School, from which he graduated in 1974. While there, he made many lasting friendships that were rekindled at his 50th reunion this past June. He stayed in the greater Boston area after graduate school and found community in Belmont, where he built lifelong friendships and continued to practice his Catholic faith. With encouragement from family and friends, he eventually gave up his allegiance to New York sports teams in favor of Boston, just in time for many championships to pour in.
Kevin started his business career in real estate investment at the New England Life Insurance Company in Boston, MA. Nine years later, he became the Principal and Chief Investment Officer of the newly formed Copley Real Estate Advisors, LLC, where he remained until the company was sold in 1997. After retirement, Kevin continued to serve on many boards and shared his finance and real estate expertise as a volunteer, a role he thoroughly enjoyed. Kevin embraced his time with his much-loved children, traveling, enjoying winter sports, fishing, and notably, his happy place, Woodstock, VT. Kevin was always willing to jump in to help with any project, especially for his children and their home improvement projects. He was never afraid to roll up his sleeves. He was also an avid reader and his goal was to read a book about every U.S. president before he passed. He loved the New York Times crossword puzzle, as well as any number of other word games and math puzzles. He had a brilliant mind and loved a good challenge. Kevin loved fine wines, good bourbon, and a well-cooked meal surrounded by family and friends. Most of all, he loved being a father to his three children, his “adopted” children, and a much-loved Grandah to his five grandchildren. He was grateful for the extra time he had after retirement to spend with family and friends near and far, creating lasting memories, so often in Woodstock, VT. He found wonderful balances in life - with family and friends, with exercise and indulgences, with activities and leisure, with explorations abroad and local, with intellectual interests and fun. With all of this, he always lived gratefully in the moment.
We would like to thank all the incredible doctors and medical staff who gave Kevin such wonderful care over the years and helped him survive Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. We are grateful to the staff at Mount Auburn Hospital and the Lahey Hospital MICU team, who cared so lovingly for Kevin and his family during such a difficult time at the end of his life.
Kevin is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mary, and his children and their spouses, Breen (Katie), Colin (Katherine), Erin (Mark) and his amazing grandchildren, Ella, Charlotte, Zoe, Owen and Torin. Kevin was predeceased by his parents, Mildred and John Mahony, and his brothers Brian and Jack Mahony. A memorial mass will be concelebrated at Saint Peter Parish in Cambridge on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 10 am, with a reception immediately following at a location to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be made to support Dr. Brian A. Bergmark’s Heart Research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Checks can be made payable to Brigham and Women’s Hospital with “in memory of Kevin Mahony” in the memo line and sent to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Development Office, 263 Huntington Avenue, #318, Boston, MA 02115-4506 or visit the website bwhgiving.org/memorial to make your gift online; to Georgetown University (Georgetown Fund) at giving.georgetown.edu; or to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at givenow.lls.org.
