John J Bishop Jr (Jack) passed away from natural causes on December 9, 2025 in Palm Beach, FL at home surrounded by his loved ones. Born in 1927, he lived through The Great Depression, Pearl Harbor, World War II, The Cold War, The Civil Rights Movement, the assassination of JFK, the moon landing, The Vietnam War, the digital/ tech revolution, cell phones, the birth of the internet, smart phones, computers, and now… even AI. How the world changed in his life span. He saw the change of hand of 17 different presidents and 28 presidential terms. He joined the army in 1946 which took him to serve on the west coast, Hawaii and Iceland.
At Boston University, he majored in History, received his master’s in Art Humanities and his Phd. in Art History, which was his specialty. He taught at Vanderbilt, Bowling Green and SUNY Buffalo. During retirement he continued teaching 1 art history class per semester and educated many tourists on the Sea Cloud cruise ship in the Mediterranean.
He appreciated many forms of art and traditional popular culture. He also had a love of music. Jazz music specifically. He saw some of the greats in real time in person at small clubs as they rose in popularity… The famous jazz pianist Erroll Garner, Charlie Parker and more.
His love of literature spanned from Jane Austen to Ian Flemming, he loved James Bond movies back in the 60s. And his love of movies didn’t end there. He loved the classics, the ones with an air of optimism and hope. Gene Kelly’s Singin’ in the Rain, Audrey Hepburn’s Roman Holiday, Christmas in Connecticut.
There will be a graveside burial next to his sister in Belmont Cemetery on December 22 at 11 am.
