Henry "Ted" Tierney Jr. Obituary

Henry Edward (“Ted”) Tierney, age 84, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, affectionately known as Ted or Teddy, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. Ted was the beloved son of the late Dr. Henry E. Tierney and Pauline (Mahony) Tierney. He was predeceased by his dear brother Timothy. He is survived by his cherished wife, Mary (Winbourne) Tierney, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage; his three sons: Brian, Matt, and Sean, and their spouses/partners; and his two loving grandchildren: Rory and Saoirse. Ted also leaves behind his devoted brothers Peter and Paul, their spouses, and many nieces and nephews. Ted was born and raised in West Cambridge, where he proudly lived his entire life on Appleton Street. He was known as one of the “neighborhood guys,” always with a smile on his face and a story that had to be told. A graduate of Cambridge Latin High School, Ted was an integral part of the 1958 MIAA State Ice Hockey Championship Team, where he proudly served as team manager. The team was inducted into the Cambridge Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012. Ted dedicated over 30 years of his career as a salesman for United Liquors and Martignetti Companies, where he earned the nickname “Mr. Wine Man” and sometimes “Howard” from his work friends and customers. Ted loved spending time at his home away from home on Pleasant St. in Clinton, Massachusetts, with his late aunts and uncles: Alice (Tierney) Messenger, May, Katherine (Tierney) Burke, Irene (Tierney) Wentworth, Raymond, and Edmund, and their spouses and children, all a significant and beloved part of his life. As a youth, Ted also spent summers and holidays at the Sterling Inn in Sterling, Massachusetts which was originally owned and operated by his late grandfather David J. Mahony of Winthrop and subsequently his late uncle Ralph G. Mahony. In his later years, Ted was happiest when visiting Maine’s MidCoast, where he was surrounded by his brothers and their families sharing lobsters at Round Pond or visiting the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse in Bristol, ME. He lived well, was well-loved, and will be missed.

Visitation will be held in the Brown & Hickey Funeral Home, 36 Trapelo Rd., Belmont, on Monday January 27th, from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited.
