Giovanna Missio Obituary

Giovanna (Turano) Missio, resident of Belmont, died peacefully at her home, on February 26, 2023. Beloved wife of the late Danilo Missio. Loving mother of Monica Missio and her late husband Richard Cleves of New York City, Nicole Missio and her husband Chris McGeown of Lexington, MA and the late Alessandro Missio. Cherished grandmother of Andrew and Max McGeown of Lexington and the late Nicholas Cleves of New York. She is survived by her sister MariaLuisa (Turano) Velotti and her brother Carlo Turano both of Rome and many nieces and nephews throughout Italy.

Giovanna was born in Rome on April 8, 1930, the eldest of three children of the late prof. Luigi and Maria Turano. She and her husband Danilo were married in Rome in 1955 and moved permanently to the Boston area from Italy in the early 1960’s where they raised their three children, Alessandro, Monica, and Nicoletta.

Throughout Giovanna’s life, she was passionate about her family, her cultural heritage, the arts, and making life-long connections with people.

Giovanna was an incredibly creative and active person. Her insatiable curiosity led her to explore many art forms. As a self-taught painter, she was prolific until the very end. She became  an Italian language instructor in a variety of settings; including private lessons, public schools and the Belmont Senior Center.  She gave back to the community by volunteering at the Fogg Museum of Art at Harvard University, the Circolo Italiano of Boston and the Belmont Garden Club where she enjoyed preparing floral arrangements for public exhibits and friends.

Her enthusiasm for Italian culture was infectious and she took special delight in hosting dinner parties and entertaining friends. But her greatest love was spending time with her family and relatives. Cooking for her children and grandchildren was an expression of love. Being a grandmother to Andrew, Nicholas and Max was the most fulfilling role in her life. She relished the time spent with her three grandsons on family vacations and holidays, and she was able to travel back to Italy with them on a number of occasions.

Despite having endured several tragic losses, Giovanna remained remarkably engaged in life until the very end. She will be greatly missed by all of us who were fortunate enough to call her Mom, sister, friend, or Nonna.
