Florence “Nancy” O’Connor, 86, of Belmont, Massachusetts passed away peacefully on March 24, 2023, after a brief illness surrounded by her loving children. The beloved wife of sixty years to the late Matthew J. O’Connor, she is survived by her three loving children, Carolyn Hoogendoorn and her husband John of Belmont, MA, Matthew J. O'Connor, Jr. of Belmont, MA, and Nancy Ann Castignetti and her husband Al of Mendham, NJ. Cherished “Mommy O” to five grandchildren, Michael Hoogendoorn and his wife Breanna, Stephen Hoogendoorn, Joe, Jackie and Lauren Castignetti and great granddaughter, Amelia Hoogendoorn. Nancy is survived by her sisters, Edith Monahan of Belmont, MA, Marie Stabile of Palm Coast, FL, and Dorothy Hecht of Dana Point, CA and was predeceased by her siblings Jane Tingey, Robert Mungovan, Carol Janes, Sally Mungovan, and Walter Mungovan.
Nancy was a special soul who profoundly touched the lives of those fortunate enough to have known her. Nancy was always known for her wit, clever humor, and prowess at playing cards with her “card girls” for over 50 years. Aside from the word “remarkable,” the best way to describe Nancy was fun-loving and spontaneous—the childhoods of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchild are filled with memories of scavenger hunts, laughter-filled games of the Irish card game forty-fives, and prizes that often involved candy or Brigham’s ice cream.
At home in Belmont, she loved sitting on her ivy-covered porch, where she could listen to the laughter of elementary school children walking to and from school while she spent time with her dearly loved husband, children, siblings, and grandchildren. Anyone who knew Nancy knew of her deep patriotism and love for her country—she was eternally proud that her husband, father, and two brothers bravely served their country. When not at home in Belmont, she loved taking weekend trips to Hampton Beach with friends and loved ones.
Her deep sense of faith and relationship with God carried her throughout her 86-year life. Those who knew her best often heard her sincerely say, “I’ve been praying for you.” Now, we say a prayer for her—that her wonderful, rich, and full life is simply the beginning and that she sits on a ivy covered porch in heaven, reunited with her husband, siblings, parents, and loved ones forever.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 15th at 10:00am at St. Joseph’s church, 130 Common St., Belmont, MA. Relatives and friends invited. Internment Belmont Cemetery.
