Dorothy Elaine Chipman, passed away peacefully on May 28 th , 2022 at 88 years of age at
Brooksby Village in Peabody MA. Elaine was the wife of the late Charles D. Chipman, M.D., the
stepmother of Remembrance, Stewart and Brook Chipman, and daughter of the late Charles
and Irene Walts.
Elaine was born in Trenton NJ and raised in Belmont MA where she graduated from Belmont
High School, class of 1951, and from University of Maine, class of 1955. After college Elaine
worked as a clinical laboratory associate at the Malden Hospital.
Elaine and her husband Don enjoyed gardening around their house in Winchester MA, acting
in community theater, and spending time at their summer house on Nantucket MA. Elaine
was an accomplished artist working in multiple mediums (painting & quilting) who was active
in several local art associations. Elaine and Don were long-time and active members of the
Winchester Unitarian Society, and after moving to Brooksby Village Elaine became active in
the North Shore Unitarian Universalist church in Danvers MA. Elaine was also a member of
the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, with an active interest in forest
preservation/management.
Elaine is survived by her daughter Remembrance A. (and Robert) Belser of Roswell GA, son
Stewart D. (and Jacqueline) Chipman of Bainbridge Island WA, and son Brook W. (and Karen)
Chipman of Reading MA. She also left behind grandchildren Meredith M. (and Justin) Barnes
of Decatur GA, Jeff R. (and Maggie) Belser of Westerville OH, Kurt T. Belser of Albany OH, Joy
K. Belser of Roswell GA, Laura B. Chipman of La Jolla CA, Henry D. Chipman of Seattle WA,
Brook W. Chipman II of Burlington VT, and Mary K. Chipman of New York NY. She is also
survived by 5 beautiful great grandchildren.
Elaine will always remain in our hearts and minds as the bright, humorous, industrious, and
caring person that she was. Expressions of sympathy can be made to the American
Parkinson’s Disease Association, 135 Parkinson Ave, Staten Island, NY 10305. A private
interment will be at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, with a private memorial service to be
held in the future at Brooksby Village in Peabody.
