David E. Powers, 87, of Andover, MA passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on August 29, 2023.
David was the son of the late Florence (Clough) Powers and Charles T. Powers. Born in Springfield, MA on December 3, 1935. David was the fifth sibling out of six; Thomas, Charles, Roberta, Frances and Albert. He graduated from Tilton-Northfield High School and went on to Keene State College where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Education. David also attended two years at Bangor Theological Seminary.
During his younger years, David was employed by Lakes Region Laundry in Laconia, NH where he met his wife, Joyce, of sixty two years. He went on to become a teacher in Ayer, MA for the children of Fort Devens Military Base. David also sold shoes, for twenty years, with the Knapp Shoe Company. After retiring from teaching, he was employed by the IRS Service Center of Andover, MA for close to thirty years. David had an incredible work ethic that he instilled in his family.
David and Joyce married in June of 1961 and had three daughters Karen Vocell, Wendy Contos (Andy) and Deborah Nutton. David started his married life in Littleton, MA and eventually moved to Andover, MA, where he resided for the last forty four years.
David enjoyed antique cars and was a vast train enthusiast. It was hard to get him out of the water as he loved to swim. He loved a cookout with family, especially when hot dogs were on the menu. David always enjoyed an opportunity to dance with his beloved wife, Joyce. He had a fantastic tenor voice and enjoyed singing at family events over the years. He had a great sense of humor and always had a joke or a story to tell. David’s most precious times, though, were spent with his loving family. He was loved by many and will be missed by his family and friends. David is survived by his wife of sixty two years, Joyce; daughters Karen Vocell of Lowell, MA, Wendy Contos (Andy) of Syracuse, NY and Deborah Nutton of Andover, MA; Brother Albert Powers; seven grandchildren Chrissy Pike (Henry), Ryan Vocell, Amanda Vocell (Peter Calitri), Breanne Bohling (Nick), Shaun Lima, Katelyn Cunniff (Jake) and Drew Contos; Great granddaughter Avery Cunniff and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Visiting Hours at the Brown & Hickey Funeral Home, 36 Trapelo Rd, Belmont, MA, on Wednesday, September 6, from 4 to 7pm. Funeral services to
be held Thursday, September 7 at 11:00am at Payson Park Church in Belmont, MA, 365 Belmont Street, Belmont, MA.
