Ann McCormick passed away peacefully on November 23rd, 2025 at the age of 97. Ann was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1928 to John Stanley McCormick and Alice Cannon, the middle child of five. The family moved to Belmont soon after and Ann spent the rest of her life as a Greater Bostonian. She attended the Katherine Gibbs School in Back Bay during the school’s famous “white gloves” period. She showed up for her first and only interview in 1948 for a position as Receptionist at Boston University’s Placement Office in proper attire - suit, hats and gloves - and got the job at $32 a week. She stayed at BU her entire 49-year career, rising to be the highest paid Director of Student Employment in the nation. At BU she was known for a series of fast cars, the informal Hug-a-Kid initiative and a number of innovations with respect to Veterans Affairs and Adult & Family Literacy. She was particularly proud of protecting student identities during the turbulent Vietnam War protests, as well as being a charter member of BSASH - the “Before-Silber-and-Still-Here” club. As she said herself: “I was always good at office politics”.
Ann passed her retirement on adventure, alone and with her brothers and sisters, notably a whitewater trip down the Yampa River, searching for tigers on elephant-back in Nepal, scampering from her tent to the outdoor privy on safari in Africa, and celebrating her 80th birthday dune-bashing in the deserts of the UAE. And of course, her dinners for friends and family at Jamaicaway Towers, her cherished view from the 21st floor, and her walks through the Emerald Necklace, even if, in later years, with her trustee BMW (“best mobile walker”).
Ann was the last of her generation, being predeceased by her brothers John and Tom and her sisters Jane and Ellen. In her last year she lost her first niece, Suze. She is survived by her nephews and nieces, chronologically: Stephen, Linda, Lisa, Carol, Betsy, Mark, Michael, Jon, Karen and Megan, her great-nieces and nephews Nathalie, Laura, Vanessa, Holly, Clio, Jonathan, Benjamin, Hannah, Luke, Leo, Jack, Rie and Laszlo, her great-great nephews Sid and Arden, her two sisters-in-law Liz and Judy,as well as devoted members of her “BU family”. Her sharp questions and ready generosity will be missed.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather for a committal service in Belmont Cemetery, 121 Grove St., Belmont, on Saturday, December 13th, at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, Ann would almost certainly have appreciated a gift to any cause of your choosing.
