Richard A. Gallant

January 6, 1930 ~ August 30, 2019 (age 89)

Obituary

Richard A. Gallant, 89, passed away on August 30, 2019 at his home. Richard was a career banker in Boston.

His successes included time as Sr. Vice President of State Street Bank in the 1970s, Sr. Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the Provident Savings Bank in the 1980s and President & Chairman of the Board of the Federal Savings Bank in the 1990s.

He served our country with the United States Army in Germany during the Korean War where he earned the Army of Occupation Medal. Richard was a “Double Eagle” earning both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Boston College during the mid-1950s.

Richard spent his childhood in Cambridge on Raymond Street where he was raised by Vandelin and Lucienne Gallant in a family of 8 children and cherished celebrations with his family and made friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Richard married his first wife, Helen Margaret Gallant (Ring), in 1965, where 21 years of marriage produced  4 boys – Richard, Daniel, Mark and Michael – which they together raised on Village Hill Road in Belmont. A weekend would not go by without seeing Richard at some Belmont sporting event watching one of his boys compete on one of the many Belmont fields or ice rinks.

In 1990, Richard married his second wife Laura Gallant (Brown) of Belmont. Richard and Laura spent nearly 20 years building homes together in Wolfeboro, NH and Dunstable, MA, traveling the world and spending time visiting with their sons and daughters and their families.

In retirement, he revisited the family business of carpentry and enjoyed decades of building homes and furniture with and for his family and assembled a generational coin collection that has been transferred to his sons and god children. He loved spending time with his family simply watching all his children and grandchildren’s endeavors.

Richard was a kind, thoughtful man whose quiet presence and uncanny work ethic provided unwavering support to his extended family, friends and coworkers. A true GALLANT man for all who knew him.

Richard is survived by his wife Laura, Richard & Susanna Gallant of Concord MA, Daniel & Alexandria Gallant of Sterling, NJ, Michael & Joan Gallant of Newton, MA, 10 grandchildren – Mark, Sophia, Abigail, Rachel, Ryan, Daniel, Sarah, Meeghan, Elizabeth and Little Richard - his siblings Alfred, Lillian and Elaine and countless nieces, nephews, cousins and godchildren.

Richard’s life will be celebrated in a private ceremony. He will be interred in Belmont Cemetery alongside Helen and Mark.
