Charles Babalas Obituary

Charles Babalas, 69,  peacefully passed away in his home, on January 28th, after a long battle with cancer.  Son of the late Charles and Stella (Canaris) Babalas, Charlie was born in Boston and grew up in Watertown and Cambridge. He graduated from Cambridge Ridge and Latin in 1966 and also attended Boston University and Clarke University.

Charlie was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. After meeting his wife of 43 years, Athena "Tina" Souliotis,  at a church dance in Worcester, they lived in Brockton for 41 years raising two daughters. He was the proud father of Diane, wife of Greg Knollmeyer, and loving grandfather of Tessia and Rafael; and Emily, wife of Michael Blake, and loving grandfather of Zoe and Noah.  Charlie was a devoted brother to his sister, Catherine, wife of Paul Braverman of Southborough, MA .

After retiring as an independent distributor, Charlie and his wife moved to Waltham in 2015 where he continued to work on week-ends as a merchandiser.  Charlie was always busy working on home projects. He was well known as a very enthusiastic and proud fan of the New York Giants and enjoyed all sports. In his free time he  was an avid golfer, and  especially enjoyed playing with his sister as well as with his cohort of friends. He enjoyed road trips around New England and traveling abroad. One of his favorite things to do, however, was entertaining at home with friends and family. His skills cooking out on the barbeque were famous especially at Greek Easter. Charlie was also well known for his sense of humor, telling stories, and engaging with people in conversations even in the supermarket as he was working. He was proud of being a Bostonian his whole life and always knew the secrets of navigating the North End. He had a zest for life and pursued many varied interests learning new things at every opportunity. He will be deeply missed by all his family and friends.

Charlie's family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to his doctors, nurses, and staff at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Newton Wellesley Hospital for their outstanding care and concern during his illness.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to either St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Lexington or to further cancer research.
