SIMONDS, MARY TRAFTON, aged 94, passed away peacefully, while living at Brookhaven Retirement Community in Lexington, MA on March 27, 2012. Born on August 23, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Willis Allen Trafton and Frances Dain Trafton of Auburn, Maine. She attended Abbot Academy (now part of Phillips Academy, Andover), Colby-Junior College (now Colby- Sawyer College), Class of 1938 and Mount Holyoke College, Class of 1940 with a major in Economics. After college, she worked at The Babson Institute, Wellesley and at Liberty Mutual Life Insurance Company as a financial analyst. During World War II, she volunteered with The Red Cross. She married John Langdon Simonds of Boston and North Andover the day of the Coconut Grove Fire: November 27, 1942. They lived happily for 57 years in Cambridge and Belmont. John Simonds, an attorney at law, died in 1999.
Mary was active in Cambridge, as a volunteer at Mount Auburn Hospital. She was President of the Ladies Auxiliary and Head of the Thursday Morning Talks Committee for three years. She was a Hospital Incorporator and Overseer for many years and also served on the Hospital's Development Committee.
Mary was on The Board of Trustees of Colby-Sawyer College in New London, N.H. serving as Secretary of the Board from 1953-1973. She received the 2005 Distinguished Alumni Award for her 35 years of service to the college. She said that this was "one of the most important accomplishments of my life." She was made a Life Trustee Emerita of the college. Mary was a member of The National Society of The Colonial Dames in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and was also a member of the Chilton Club, and a former member of the Cambridge Boat Club and the Belmont Hill Club. She belonged to The Mothers' Club in Cambridge, and the Belmont Garden Club.
Mary is survived by her three children, Virginia S. White of Dover, MA, Robert L. Simonds of Belmont, MA and William T. Simonds of Concord. MA along with seven grandchildren, Christopher L. White, Hilary B. White, Caroline F. Simonds, Rebecca S. Tidmarsh, Alden B. Simonds, Henry G. Simonds and Emily A. Simonds and one great-grandchild, Yarrow B. White. She also had two brothers, Stephen D. Trafton and Willis A. Trafton, Jr. and a sister, Helen T. Gutmann – all of Auburn. ME, who pre-deceased her. She is survived by a cousin, Betty Stevens Earle, of Guilford, England, who became a member of the family at an early age.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 4, 2012 at 11 am at The Payson Park Church, 365 Belmont Street, Belmont.
